As torrential rains continue to impact parts of the Bono Region, the Regional Directorate of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has identified 78 flood-prone areas and is taking proactive measures to minimize risks to lives and property.

This renewed focus on disaster prevention comes in the wake of a tragic incident in Sunyani, where a 3-year-old boy lost his life after falling into an open drain during heavy rainfall in the Abetifi Electoral Area of the Sunyani East Municipality.

In an interview with Citi News on May 20, Bono Regional NADMO Director Fati Keni emphasized the urgency of the situation, highlighting the vulnerability of many communities. She stressed the importance of public education as a key strategy to reduce casualties during the rainy season.

NADMO teams are set to be deployed to raise awareness in high-risk areas. “We have 78 flood-prone areas within the region. In Sunyani, for example, we have New Town, New Doma, and other places. The situation is too rampant here. Communication is key during this season, so we are going out to engage with local communities and discuss what to expect during the rainy season and the measures they should take,” Keni stated.
