Students of the Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED) are calling on the government and the Ashanti Regional Minister to urgently intervene in the rising cost of student accommodation in Tanoso and surrounding areas.

According to the students, hostel rent prices have become unbearable, with some landlords charging between GHS 4,000 and GHS 8,000 per academic year for shared self-contained rooms. Many students say the sharp rise is making it increasingly difficult to afford housing and focus on their studies

Speaking to Media9, some students described the situation as exploitative and called for rent regulation and enforcement by local authorities. They also urged the government to collaborate with the university to provide affordable on-campus accommodation or subsidized housing alternatives.

“We are struggling to pay our fees and now rent is becoming even more expensive than tuition,” a student lamented.

The students are demanding swift action from the Regional Minister and the Ministry of Works and Housing to investigate the issue and ensure that landlords comply with fair rental practices

Student leaders are also pushing for university management to expand on-campus accommodation or explore partnerships with private developers to build affordable hostels.

As frustration mounts, the students said they will push hard to ensure their voices are heard.
