Kwasi Kwarteng, spokesperson for former Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong, has clarified that the stabbing of a Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) student during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) “Thank You” tour in the Ashanti Region on April 29 was not due to a fight between students, but rather an unprovoked attack by a macho man.
Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News, Kwarteng dismissed reports suggesting the incident resulted from a scuffle among students. He explained that the victim, a member of Unity Hall’s Jama group, was stabbed following a confrontation regarding performance time and the distribution of money.
“I want to state on record that this is not a case of disagreement between two students but a case of a macho man stabbing a student,” he asserted.
The Jama group had been hired by Agyapong’s team to perform at the event held at Bantama Pentecost Church. Kwarteng noted that tensions arose when attendees complained about the group’s extended performance. During the confrontation, one of the macho men allegedly brandished a gun at the students.
“After we left, we heard about the stabbing incident. When we reached the police station, the account indicated that the individual who stabbed them was the same person who displayed a gun when they resisted calls to stop their performance,” he recounted.
He added that a dispute over money contributed to the altercation, clarifying that Kennedy Agyapong was not involved in the distribution of funds. “The disagreement over money was not between two students. It was a supporter of Kennedy Agyapong who gave GH¢1,000 for the students to share.”
Kwarteng alleged that after the money was handed out, the macho men forcibly seized it and attacked the students. “When they snatched the money, the student protested, which prompted the macho men, who were already in a vehicle, to start shooting. The student fled, but they chased him down and succeeded in stabbing him,” he concluded.
