Private legal practitioner and spokesperson for the Movement for Change, Andrew Appiah-Danquah, has criticized the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) for its recent statement opposing the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, describing the move as both “preposterous” and unrepresentative of the broader legal community.

In an appearance on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, May 3, Appiah-Danquah questioned the legitimacy of the GBA’s position, asserting that it does not reflect the opinions of the majority of its members.

“It’s preposterous and very dangerous for 0.1% of a group to make a decision and claim it represents us all. I am not part of that decision,” he stated.

He acknowledged an earlier statement from the GBA, which he deemed more balanced and appropriate, particularly in its call to uphold the rule of law and promote transparency—principles he strongly supports.

“They issued an earlier statement that I felt was perfect. A call to abide by the rule of law is essential because it reflects our collective hope for a political culture that guarantees these principles. The call for transparency is one I agree with,” he noted.

However, Appiah-Danquah emphasized that any new position adopted by a small, unrepresentative faction within the association cannot be imposed as the collective voice of all members.

“But without delving into the merits of their arguments, it is preposterous for 0.1% to decide and claim that we will all be bound by it,” he concluded.
