Retired Supreme Court Judge, Justice William Atuguba, has condemned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for its opposition to the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, labeling the party’s stance as hypocritical and devoid of moral authority.

His remarks come in response to a demonstration organized by the NPP and allied political parties on Monday, May 5, in Accra, where protesters called for the immediate reinstatement of the Chief Justice. They argued that President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to suspend her was unconstitutional and politically motivated, claiming it posed a threat to the independence of the judiciary.

In an interview with Joy News, Justice Atuguba questioned the NPP’s credibility regarding judicial independence.

“How were they when they were in office? How did they perform? Did they act transparently in the interest of the people? What!” he stated.

He expressed frustration over the hypocrisy displayed, noting, “The exclusion of public interest in our political space is very troubling.”

Justice Atuguba also referenced the negative portrayal of the Supreme Court on social media prior to the elections, questioning, “Was it President Mahama who was doing that? They were in office; what steps did they take?”
