A new pope has been selected, marked by the iconic white smoke billowing from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City. The name of the new pontiff is expected to be announced shortly as he prepares to appear on the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica.
The decision was made by 133 red-robed cardinals from around the world, who convened in secrecy for the papal conclave.
During this highly guarded process, the cardinals were completely isolated from the outside world while casting their votes to elect the next leader of the Catholic Church, which serves over 1.4 billion faithful globally.
News of the white smoke ignited jubilation across St. Peter’s Square, where thousands had gathered in anticipation. Applause, cheers, and tears erupted as the smoke signaled that a two-thirds majority had been achieved.
“I’m so happy; it’s incredible to be here at this moment,” exclaimed 42-year-old Roseleia Cordeiro from Brazil, overcome with emotion as she embraced her friends. “I can’t express how grateful I am to God for this moment.”
With each new puff of white smoke, the cheers from the crowd grew louder as worshippers celebrated this historic occasion with prayers, songs, and joyful tears, eagerly awaiting their first glimpse of the new spiritual leader.
