The European Union (EU) and its Member States have pledged more than €800 million (approximately GH₵13 billion) to significant infrastructure projects across Ghana’s energy, health, and transport sectors, announced EU Ambassador to Ghana, Mr. Irchad Razaaly.

This investment includes €55 million dedicated to supporting local vaccine production, €62 million for retrofitting the Kpong Dam, and an estimated €370 million for developing smart and sustainable cities in northern Ghana.

The Global Gateway initiative combines numerous infrastructure projects with investments in standards, technology transfer, and expertise, enhancing the economic capabilities of partner countries like Ghana. It is executed through the collective efforts of Team Europe, mobilizing all EU institutions, Member States, their Development Financial Institutions, the European Investment Bank (EIB), the EBRD, and the European private sector.

Ambassador Razaaly emphasized the EU’s commitment to increasing investments in major infrastructure and collaborating with Ghana to build equitable access to energy, clean water, and sanitation.

Speaking at this year’s Europe Day Reception in Accra, he reaffirmed the EU’s dedication to strengthening its partnership with Ghana in various areas, including trade, security, climate resilience, and youth empowerment. He stated, “The EU remains a credible, reliable, and dependable partner to Ghana. In these turbulent times, collaboration with like-minded friends and allies is more important than ever.”

The annual Europe Day celebration brought together diplomats, government officials, private sector leaders, civil society representatives, and media professionals in a festive atmosphere to honor the enduring partnership between the EU and Ghana. This year’s event held special significance as it marked the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, the founding document of the European Union.

Ambassador Razaaly declared, “I am proud to say, without hesitation, that the EU-Ghana partnership is stronger than ever. Ghana remains a preferred partner to the European Union, and our collaboration continues to deepen.”

From 2021 to 2027, Team Europe plans to invest nearly €1 billion (approximately GH₵16 billion) in infrastructure projects in Ghana. In terms of peace and security, the EU has become a crucial partner, delivering military equipment worth €50 million and providing targeted training for Ghana’s military and civilian security forces.

The Ambassador noted, “Together with our Member States, the EU supports over 30 security-related projects in Ghana, covering areas from conflict prevention to border management and maritime security.”

In education and training, Mr. Razaaly highlighted the EU’s commitment to Ghana’s youth through initiatives like the Pact for Skills in Technical and Vocational Training, along with scholarships for 1,000 Ghanaian students and professionals each year.

Mr. George Opare-Addo, Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, remarked that the partnership with the EU has been vital for Ghana, grounded in shared values of peace, prosperity, and people-centered development. He stated, “Together, we advance priorities from education to youth development and infrastructure, ensuring no one is left behind.”
