
Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has announced that the government’s crackdown on organised street begging in Accra marks the start of a broader nationwide initiative to address the issue across Ghana.
In an official update shared on his Facebook page, the Minister revealed that a recent operation by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) resulted in the arrest of 2,241 foreign nationals involved in organised street begging in the Greater Accra Region. The intelligence-led operation, conducted in the early hours of Friday, May 16, 2025, targeted key hotspots throughout the capital.
According to the Minister, those arrested included 909 adults and 1,332 children, with a gender breakdown of 961 males and 1,280 females. He emphasized that this operation is part of an ongoing effort to restore public order and safeguard national security.

“I want to commend the personnel of GIS for their commitment to national security,” Muntaka stated. He acknowledged public reactions and calls for similar actions in cities like Kumasi, Tamale, and others, assuring citizens that this is a nationwide exercise beginning in Accra and set to expand to other regions soon.
The Minister also appealed for public cooperation as the operation progresses beyond the capital, urging communities to support the effort to maintain safe and orderly streets.
“I count on your continued cooperation and support when the operations reach your communities,” he said, encouraging all Ghanaians to work together with authorities.
