In a significant operation, the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has apprehended 2,241 foreign nationals engaged in street begging in Accra. This group comprises 909 adults and 1,332 children.

The operation commenced in the early hours of Friday, May 16, 2025, focusing on areas including Kaneshie, Abossey Okai, and the Kwame Nkrumah Circle. Officers interacted with individuals before relocating them from the pavements and intersections where they frequently begged for alms.

According to sources within the GIS, plans are underway to repatriate the individuals once their identities are confirmed. The presence of these street beggars has raised concerns about national security, prompting action from immigration authorities.

Several women and children, suspected to be foreign nationals, were collected and taken in an immigration vehicle to an assembly point for further processing.
