President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his proposal for the development of a new city to alleviate the increasing congestion in Accra, highlighting issues such as rapid urbanisation, traffic gridlock, and inadequate infrastructure.
“Accra is overstretched,” Mahama stated. “The capital is facing mounting pressure from rapid urbanisation, traffic congestion, and inadequate infrastructure. It is time to think long-term and plan for a new city to ease this burden.”
He delivered these remarks during his Greater Accra ‘Thank You Tour’ at the Old Ghanata Astroturf in Dodowa on Friday, May 16.
Mahama first introduced the idea in 2024, suggesting a feasibility study for the construction of a new city outside Accra. This proposed city would function as a secondary administrative and commercial hub, aimed at decongesting the capital by relocating certain government ministries, departments, agencies, and financial institutions.
According to Mahama, the future city could span parts of the Greater Accra, Eastern, and Volta regions, strategically located near the Volta Lake. He envisions it as a green, digital metropolis featuring industrial parks, financial services, and tourist attractions, designed to operate as a 24-hour economy.
