President John Dramani Mahama marked Ghana’s May Day celebrations with a message recognizing the invaluable contributions of Ghanaian workers and reaffirming his government’s commitment to job creation, economic stability, and social justice.

In a statement posted on Facebook, President Mahama celebrated the “tireless efforts, dedication, and contributions” of workers across the nation, describing them as the “engine of our economy” and “innovators who propel us forward.”

This year’s celebration is themed: “Striving for peace and stability to drive industrialisation, trade, and decent work for social justice.” The President noted that this theme reflects a “critical truth”—that sustainable development and fair wages for all require deliberate and inclusive policy implementation.

He outlined several recent initiatives launched under his leadership aimed at boosting employment and improving working conditions. These include the National Apprenticeship Programme, the Adwumawura Programme, and the One Million Coders initiative—all introduced in recent weeks as part of what he termed a “120-day social contract with the people of Ghana.”

“These interventions are part of our strategic plan to create opportunities for decent jobs,” he stated, adding that his government is also focused on stabilizing the economy, adding value to raw materials, and expanding trade through policies like the 24-hour economy.

Acknowledging the country’s economic challenges, including inflation and unemployment, President Mahama expressed determination to tackle these issues through investment in education, skills training, and infrastructure.

He also pledged stronger enforcement of labor laws and the promotion of social dialogue between employers and workers.

“Let us work together to create a more prosperous and equitable Ghana, where every citizen can contribute their talents and skills to national development,” he concluded.
