Minority Leader in Parliament and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has lauded the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) for successfully enhancing its public image, referring to the party as a “sellable” and “marketable” brand.
In an appearance on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Mr. Afenyo-Markin emphasized that in Ghana, voters prioritize political party identity over individual candidates. “When it comes to elections, people look at the party. The NDC is now a strong brand. That’s what people want,” he stated.
He also discussed the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the party he represents, noting that voters still recall its legacy and influential leaders like Kufuor, Busia, and President Akufo-Addo. Reflecting on his university days, he mentioned the challenges students faced in openly supporting the NDC, as many feared the association.
“Today, I must commend the NDC. They’ve worked hard to fix that image. On campuses, they’ve done outreach, and students now proudly say, ‘I am NDC,’” he added.
Afenyo-Markin pointed out the NDC’s success in gaining traction among academics and professionals, including lawyers—groups historically aligned with the NPP. “The NDC saw the need to change and took steps. Now you see doctors and professors openly supporting them. That wasn’t common 20 years ago,” he remarked.
He urged the NPP, now in opposition, to learn from the NDC’s strategies and strengthen connections with young people, professionals, and students. “As Minority, we have to rebuild trust in the NPP. This will prepare us for a strong comeback in the 2028 elections,” he concluded, stressing the importance of rebranding to restore confidence in the NPP among Ghanaians.
