The Bank of Ghana will launch a series of national events starting July 19, 2025, to commemorate 60 years of the cedi as Ghana’s official currency.
This anniversary underscores the cedi’s pivotal role in shaping Ghana’s economic journey, from its introduction in 1965 as a replacement for the Ghanaian Pound to its status as a symbol of the country’s financial independence and economic reforms.
In a statement issued on May 13, 2025, the central bank highlighted the celebration as an opportunity to reflect on the cedi’s evolution and resilience amid global and domestic economic changes. The currency is portrayed as a testament to Ghana’s efforts toward a stable and inclusive economy.
“This anniversary offers Ghanaians a chance to reflect on the history of the cedi, celebrate our progress, and reaffirm our collective responsibility to protect the value and integrity of the currency,” the statement read.
The Bank of Ghana also emphasized that the anniversary will serve as a platform to engage the public on the importance of monetary stability and the adoption of digital financial tools.
Planned activities include official launches, educational campaigns, stakeholder dialogues, and public exhibitions, which will take place from July to December.
This milestone not only marks six decades of monetary transformation but also reinforces the collective responsibility to uphold the value and credibility of the cedi. Further details on the planned activities will be announced in the coming weeks.
