The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) is set to implement a decongestion exercise targeting key areas in the city beginning Tuesday, May 20, 2025. The first day will focus on locations around the AMA Head Office, Kinbu Road to Railways, ECG Junction to the King Tackie Tawiah Statue, Zongo Lane, and Opera Square to Adabraka.
On Day 2, the operation will extend from Wato Junction through King Tackie Tawiah School and Cow Lane, UTC Road to Timber Market, and parts of the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, including Las Palmas and Glamour Road. Day 3 will address the remaining areas of the Circle and the Kaneshie enclave, including Pamprom Lane and the footbridges.
This three-day initiative is being led by the AMA in collaboration with the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA), with support from the Ghana Police Service, market leaders, transport unions, and other stakeholders.

In a statement issued on Friday, the AMA emphasized that the exercise is a strict enforcement of the AMA Hawkers Bye-Laws (2017) and Section 117(1) of the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2180), which prohibit activities obstructing pedestrian and vehicular movement in public areas.
The statement, signed by the Head of Public Affairs on behalf of Mayor Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, instructed all affected individuals to vacate these locations by the end of Monday, May 19, 2025.
Furthermore, the AMA confirmed that prior consultations had indicated sufficient space within designated markets to accommodate traders. The statement also revealed plans to introduce a 24-hour city operation model as part of the urban renewal strategy, which includes a dedicated clean-up and security task force aimed at enhancing sanitation and facilitating safe nighttime commercial activities in the capital.
The AMA is calling on the public to support this exercise and urged full cooperation from affected groups to help restore order and dignity to the city.
